Steve Gunther

Born in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Stephen Gunther moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1980.  Stephen attended Cox High School from 1984 thru 1988 but did not graduate.  In November of 1988,  Stephen took and passed the GED test.   Between 1989 and 1995, Stephen attended Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach but did not take studying seriously.  In 1995 something clicked, and Stephen got serious about his education.  He transferred to Old Dominion University in the fall semester of 1995.  In the spring of 1997, Stephen earned a BS in Criminal justice with honors from Old Dominion University.  After graduating from Old Dominion, Mr. Gunther attended St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, Florida.  In May of 2000, he earned his Juris Doctor and moved back to Virginia.  Stephen sat for and passed the Virginia Bar Exam in July of 2000.  He began practicing law at the Wards Corner Office of Berg Legal Clinic doing bankruptcy law and general practice matters.    Stephen had a desire to work for a real estate practice and left Berg Legal Clinic for Titus Law Group in May of 2002.  Between May of 2002 and May of 2005, Stephen worked in the real estate department of Titus Law Group.  Upon finding out about problems with the firm, Stephen hired counsel, notified the bar, and left the firm to open Stephen M. Gunther P.C.  In 2006, Stephen became the President of the Tidewater Real Estate Investors Group (TRIG) which is the largest real estate investment club in the Hampton Roads section of Virginia.  He continued as the TRIG President until January of 2010.  While operating his firm Stephen participated in over 3000 real estate transactions.  This turned out to be four too many.  Between 2006 and 2007, four transactions were closed improperly.  In June of 2009, the FBI showed up at Mr. Gunther’s office and questioned him about the transactions.  Stephen has accepted full responsibility for the improper conduct he and his office committed with regard to these transactions.   In March of 2010, Stephen contacted the Virginia State Bar and brought the matter to their attention.  On March 23, 2010, Stephen consented to the revocation of his license to practice law.  On March 25, 2010, Stephen pled guilty of one count of felony wire fraud.  He has been sentenced to 20 months in the department of corrections.

Throughout his practice, Stephen has spoken to real estate investors about ethical business practices.  Stephen is using his situation to try to help others by continuing to speak to Investor Clubs, Real Estate Companies, and Law Students in Virginia and North Carolina about how to avoid fraudulent situations.  Stephen was sentenced on June 21, 2010 and is serving a period of incarceration for his crimes.
